…and comedy ensues.
I saw this sign outside a restaurant/bar that we have been frequenting.
I immediately turned to Paul and said, “Guess what we’re doing on the 20th?”
We arrived a few minutes after 8:00, but I wasn’t worried. The last time we had gone there specifically for entertainment, the show started about an hour late. We had barely gotten settled and ordered drinks, when a guy walked up to us. He couldn’t help but comment that we were white; or as he said, “really white”. He asked where we lived and I told him down the block. He laughed and replied that the United States was hardly down the block. “Minnesota?” he asked. “No.” I responded, “We live here.” He seemed quite surprised. I guess the majority of ex-pats that live in this area of India are located in Mumbai, not on the outskirts. He proceeded to tell us that he had been born in Mumbai but has lived in the states for the last 30 years and had just recently moved back. He had taken the hour plus taxi ride out to support his fellow comedians. We chatted for a bit and I found out his name is Chika Kapadia and he performs at The Comedy Store in Mumbai once a month. I plan on contacting him after my visit home in hopes of being able to catch one of his shows.
While waiting for things to get started I ran to the restroom, where I met one of the five comedians performing that night; the only female. She told me she was nervous and I wished her good luck. She didn’t need any luck though. Her act was quite funny and she seemed very comfortable on stage; probably because she’s also an actress and has been on ‘C.I.D.’, a long running TV series here.
All of the acts were funny and we had a great time. We didn’t understand or get some of the jokes; partly because they’d switch between English and Hindi but also because of the cultural differences. Here’s a clip of the MC at the beginning of the night. I know the quality of the video isn’t the greatest, but see how much you can understand…and yes, this is all in English.

It is very difficult to understand but I got parts of it. It's encouraging there are comedy nights near you. It's great that you guys are getting out and about. You are really soaking up the culture!

Can't be any worse than what we were doing to a mechanical bull in the bar after our bout in Ocala!!! That was a hoot!
It reminds me of Monsoon Wedding - I had to watch parts of that twice to understand the blend of English and Gujarati or Hindi that they were speaking. It's so seamless.
I understood a little of that. Being able to watch his mouth would help. Glad you had fun!
